Ceiling fans can be a great way to reduce your energy costs by allowing you to run your air conditioner less. It's important to select the proper ceiling fan size if you decide to install one in your home. Some simple measurements to determine the size of the room in which you are installing the fan will help you choose a fan that will cool the room effectively.
Instructions
1. Measure in feet the length and width of the room where you are installing the fan. Multiply these two numbers for the area of the room in square feet.
2. Determine the proper fan blade span based on the size of the room. For rooms up to 75 square feet, a fan 29 to 36 inches in diameter will be sufficient. For rooms 76 to 144 square feet, a fan 36 to 42 inches is recommended. A 44-inch fan is recommended for rooms measuring 145 to 225 , while rooms larger than that will require a fan 50 to 54 inches in diameter.
3. Measure the height of the walls in the room. This is necessary to determine the proper length of mount to use on the fan.
4. Mount the fan approximately 8 to 9 feet above the floor for optimal airflow. A standard mount will hang the fan 3 to 5 inches below the ceiling. Downrods are available that allow the fan to hang lower if you have very tall ceilings. Kits to mount fans flush with the ceiling are available for shorter ceilings.
