Change A Textured Ceiling

Many homes still have popcorn ceilings because it is a cost effective and easy ceiling to install. Changing the popcorn ceilings into a stylish new ceiling is simple in concept but actually requires a lot of elbow grease. Remember, safety comes first, so be sure you use proper eye and lung protection when doing this job.

Instructions

Change a Textured Ceiling

1. Contact the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) for a testing facility to see if your ceiling contains asbestos. If it does, you may need to contact a professional service to remove the ceilings as it is illegal in many states to remove and dispose of asbestos materials without certification.

2. Clear the room of furniture. It is ideal to remove all the furniture, but if this isn't possible, remove what you can. All artwork and draperies should be removed as well.

3. Close any open ducts (heat and air).

4. Roll plastic over the floor and over any remaining furniture. Tape the plastic to the walls just above the baseboards. Cover the walls by taping plastic from the ceiling and allowing it to roll down. Secure it at the baseboards.

5. Place drop cloths down over the plastic so the floor doesn't become slippery.

6. Fill the garden sprayer with water.

7. Put on your respirator and goggles.

8. Spray the ceiling with water. Work in small sections---two to three square foot areas---and get the popcorn really damp. Be careful to not get the ceiling under the popcorn wet.

9. Scrape the popcorn off the ceiling with the scraper. Continue to wet and scrape across the ceiling until all the popcorn is removed leaving a smooth ceiling. Allow it to fall into the drops cloths on the floor.

10. Roll up the plastic with the debris and place in large trash bags to for disposal.
