Use Kilz Paint Over Stains

Prepare your walls before painting to ensure an even, professional-looking finish.

Masterchem Industries manufactures the Kilz line of products, which includes primers, specialty paints and concrete care. Many of the products are specifically blended to cover up stubborn stains. Before attempting to repair the damage, you'll need to eliminate the underlying cause of the stain.

Stains

If left untreated, water stains may show through a new coat of paint.

Identify the cause of the stain before attempting to cover it up. Water stains are often caused by a leaky roof or defective plumbing. Solve these problems first, or else you'll be faced with the same issues after you've painted the area. Clean grease spots by applying paint thinner to the area, then blot the area dry. Clean residual grease with trisodium phosphate (TSP), using according to package instructions. Attack mildew with a mixture of 3 oz. of TSP or 1 oz. dry laundry detergent, 4 cups of bleach and 12 cups of water. Scrub the mildewed area while wearing gloves and safety goggles. Let the area dry at least 24 hours after cleaning.

Kilz Water-Based Primers

Water-based primers have less pungent fumes.

At the time of publication, Kilz offers six types of water-based primers, each with low odor and easy cleanup with soap and water. Primers differ from paint in that they contain a greater amount of binders, which binders help the primer adhere to the wall. Kilz recommends its water-based products for general wall prep, sealing porous surfaces and blocking stains. For example, if you've spackled a nail hole in an otherwise perfect wall, a coat of primer on the area will seal the porous spackle. Seal and cover minor stains by applying a coat of Kilz primer before painting.

Kilz Oil-Based Primers

Oil-based primers seal in tough nicotine stains.

Kilz currently offers four kinds of oil-based primers, each formulated to cover tough stains and to seal in odors. Homeowners who have tough nicotine or pet stains should consider using the oil-based products. Tough water stains may also require the use of an oil-based product, especially for roof leaks where the water may have picked up dirt from outdoor surfaces. For best results, apply two coats of primer to the worst stains. Kilz also makes a low-odor oil-based primer that has fewer fumes than the original Kilz. In addition, Kilz Upshot is a unique aerosol primer is designed be sprayed on ceiling stains.

Kilz Stain-blocking Paint

Kilz ceiling paint contains stain-blocking qualities.

Kilz ceiling paint blocks stains and is a primer in one. This matte paint is designed to be spatter-resistant, which minimizes unwanted drips when you're painting surfaces above you. It also offers excellent coverage of water stains.
