Weight A Ceiling Fan

A wobbly or noisy ceiling fan can be aggravating. Noisy or wobbly ceiling fans are typically the result of an imbalance that causes uneven blade rotation. One or more of the blades can be weighted in order to restore balanced rotation. Ceiling fan balancing kits are available at hardware stores and come with several adhesive weights as well as a clip-on, tester weight.

Instructions

1. Dust and wipe clean the ceiling fan blades with a damp sponge or rag in order to provide clean surfaces for attaching adhesive weights.

2. Use the clip-on weight to figure out exactly where the fan needs to be balanced. The clip-on weight attaches to the edges of the ceiling fan blades. Move the clip-on weight from blade to blade, turning the fan on each time you move the weight to test the balance. Try the weight at the base of the blades first, closer to the motor. If it doesn't work there, gradually move the weight closer and closer to the ends of the blades. The closer the weight gets to the end of the ceiling fan blades, the more effect it will have. Continue moving the weight until you achieve a balanced spin. This is a trial-and-error process. If your fan is highly imbalanced, more than one weight may be necessary.

3. Replace the clip-on weight with an adhesive weight. Remove the backing from the adhesive weight to reveal the sticky side and, pressing firmly, stick it onto the topside of the blade where it will not be visible.
