Shorten A Chandelier

Adjusting the length of the chain that holds a chandelier is a simple procedure.

Chandeliers create a focal point in any room. Most come with extra chandelier chain and wiring that allow you to adjust the height to suit your needs. In most cases, adjusting the chandelier length is simply a matter of shortening the chain. To hang a chandelier in an entryway, the bottom portion of it should hang at least 7 feet above the floor. Chandelier chain above a table should put the light 30 to 36 inches from the table. If the ceiling is taller than 8 feet, adjust the chain to hang the chandelier 36 inches above the table.

Instructions

1. Calculate how much chain you need to remove. Measure the height of the chandelier. Add the amount of chain needed to suspend the chandelier at the desired height. Take into consideration the depth of the ceiling medallion that attaches the chandelier to the ceiling and allow for it as well.

2. Locate the last link you need on the chain. Fasten one pair of pliers on one end of the link. Hold the other pair tightly against the other end. Gently twist the link until there's enough of an opening in the slot on the side to remove the adjacent link.

3. Close the link by twisting it in the opposite direction.

4. Work any excess wiring down through the chain. Tuck it into the top of the chandelier to hide it.
