Make A Coffer

A coffer when referring to building construction is a recessed panel on a ceiling that is surrounded by a section of beams. This is known as a coffered ceiling and can be added as a design element or used as a focal point for a room. To do this you will need to determine the design and obtain the measurements of the ceiling. The materials needed for this project can be found at any home improvement store.

Instructions

1. Measure the width and length of the ceiling with the tape measure. Make a note of the measurements.

2. Draw a diagram for the layout of the ceiling on a piece of graph paper. Outline the size of grid that you want for the coffer. Make a note of the distance between the beams for the coffer.

3. Transfer the grid to the ceiling by using the tape measure. Mark the beam location on the ceiling using a pencil. String a chalk line across the marks. Pull the chalk line tight and then snap it on the ceiling to create the grid.

4. Count the number of lines going down the width of the ceiling. Transfer the measurement of the width in step 1 to a 2-by-4 board. Cut the board to this length with the circular saw.

5. Measure the distance between the chalk lines down the length of the ceiling. Cut smaller 2-by-4 boards to this measurement.

6. Place the 2-by-4 boards over the chalk lines on the ceiling. Secure the 2-by-4 boards to the ceiling with nails using the nail gun. Drive the nails into the ceiling joists.

7. Cut the 1/4-inch oak strips using the table saw. Attach the 1/2-inch oak strips to the 2-by-4 boards with finish nails.
