Ideas For An Accent Wall For A Room With Tray Ceilings

Stencil a tray ceiling with your wall colors for a cohesive look.

Accent walls are ideal for adding interest to a room without architectural distinction. In a room with eye-catching architecture, such as a tray ceiling, an accent wall still looks quite striking -- as long as you start with a cohesive plan. You have to ensure the accent wall complements the tray ceiling instead of competing.

Paint the Accent Wall and Ceiling to Match

Tie your tray ceiling to your accent wall by painting them the same color. Instead of seeing just an accent rectangle, which is your wall, the eye will travel from the wall to the ceiling in one L-shaped sweep. The look works best if you paint the ceiling molding, the rest of the room's trim and the other three walls with the same neutral color. Use glossy paint on the trim and flat for the walls.

The most important part of this look is the color match, so the surfaces don't have to be identical. You can add a shimmering glaze to the wall paint, but leave the ceiling paint plain. Texture is another option. For example, mount metallic ceiling tiles -- or a backsplash sheet that looks like miniature tin tiles -- to the ceiling. Then, paint the accent wall with a non-metallic version of the tile color, such as pumpkin-colored paint with copper tiles.

Wallpaper the Accent Wall and Paint the Rest of the Surfaces to Match

For a patterned accent wall, paper the wall with a multicolored wallpaper. If you live in a rental and can't wallpaper, get a similar look by applying patterned fabric to your walls with liquid starch. Tie the accent wall to the ceiling by painting the inset portion with one of the wallpaper's colors. Ideally, choose the background or another prominent color from the wallpaper. To unify the look further, paint the other walls in the room with the ceiling paint.

Paint the Ceiling and Other Walls the Same Color

For a dramatic accent wall that takes center stage, paint the ceiling, the ceiling molding, the other walls and any additional trim with the same light neutral. You can use any color from bright white to warm buttercream. Then, paint the accent wall with an intense color, or wallpaper the wall with a bold pattern.

For an unexpected touch, paint your bold accent wall with black chalkboard paint, and then use chalk to draw your own designs. For a classic look, apply molding to the accent wall to create one or more raised wall panels. Paint the raised-panel molding with the same light neutral you used in the rest of the room.

Stencil the Ceiling with Both Wall Colors

If you want rich color on the accent wall and on the other walls in the room, use both colors to stencil the ceiling. You can border the inset part of the ceiling with the stenciled design, or work out from the center in a radiating pattern. If you're hanging a chandelier, stencil a border, and then paint a chandelier medallion to match. Choose a stencil design that complements your decorating style, and feel free to add additional colors if the design calls for them.
