Repair Knockdown Ceiling Texture

Knockdown ceiling texture breaks up the flat appearance of a ceiling, adding interest to the surface while hiding any minor flaws. Sprayed into place, the texture can sometimes fail, falling from the ceiling and leaving bald spots that mar the appearance. Repairing the texture so that the repaired area blends into the rest of the ceiling requires more than the application of a bit of replacement texture. To create a seamless patch, you'll need to retexture the damaged area. It's messy and time-consuming, but once you finish the newly repaired area should blend naturally into the old surface.

Instructions

1. Place dropcloths over the floor and room furnishings to prevent falling texture from staining. Use masking tape to hold the dropcloths in place. Cover the walls with plastic sheeting to avoid spreading textured material on the walls. Tape the sheeting in place as well.

2. Remove the remaining texture from the area of the texture loss, using a putty knife to scrape the material away. Sand the area smooth with sandpaper attached to a sanding block. Wipe the area clean of sanding residue with a cloth.

3. Cover any joints revealed from removing the texture with a layer of joint compound applied with a putty knife. Cover the compound with wet joint tape. Press the tape in place, using the flat of the putty knife. Use a paint sprayer to spray the sanded area with a primer coat of paint to provide a surface onto which replacement texture will stick.

4. Fill an acoustical spray gun with a mixture of joint compound and water, thinned until it has a consistency slightly thicker than pancake batter. Spray the texture onto the primed ceiling, creating an even coverage of texture. Allow the texture to set for 20 minutes without drying.

5. Move a knockdown knife across the applied texture at about a 30-degree angle to remove the peaks on the ends of the knockdown texture. Allow the texture 24 hours drying time.

6. Paint the ceiling, using an interior latex paint the same color as the original paint, to cover and blend the new texture with the original texture. Pour the paint into a roller pan and roll the roller, with extension pole attached, through the paint to apply the paint to the roller. Apply the paint to the ceiling with the roller. Place the paint in rows across the ceiling surface. Overlap the rows about an inch at the edges to prevent streaks. Allow the paint to dry for 48 hours before removing the dropcloths.
