A dropped or drop ceiling consists of new applied over an existing ceiling. When installed, the tiles drop the height of the ceiling by a few feet or a few inches. Sometimes the tiles are installed to hide a new heating system or electrical elements. The tiles used in the ceiling are usually gray or white in color and aren't very attractive. Replace the Tiles
You may not realize it, but the ugly ceiling tiles traditionally used with a drop ceiling aren't the only option. Other options include fake tin and fake copper tiles. These tiles are made of a lightweight metal and pressed into different shapes and designs. Before using these tiles, you must first measure the exact size of the tiles you currently have and find tiles that fit that size. Drop ceilings consist of an outer frame and the tiles are placed on top of the frame. Each tile fits into a specific frame; if you pick the wrong size, the tiles won't fit properly.
Cover the Tiles
Covering the ugly ceiling tiles hides away the plain color and gives the ceiling more style. You need some type of paper to cover the tiles, such as tissue paper or wallpaper. Fabric is another way to cover the ceiling tiles, and it gives the ceiling more texture. Each tile is removed from the ceiling and placed on a flat surface. You apply a coat of spray adhesive, and press the paper onto the tiles. Trim the excess paper from each tile before placing the tiles back on the ceiling. If you opt for fabric, wrap the fabric around the sides of the ceiling tiles and use staples to hold the fabric to the tiles before placing the tiles back on the ceiling.
Add Ceiling Decorations
Covering the entire ceiling not only disguises the ugly ceiling tiles but also brings more attention to the ceiling. A simple way to cover the ceiling is to drape fabric across the ceiling. Choose four separate pieces, ensuring each piece is long enough to reach from the center of the ceiling to the corner and then to the floor. Take the end of one piece, and attach it the center of the ceiling with a hook. Drape the fabric to one corner, attach a second hook and let the fabric hang loosely to the ground. Repeat the process with another piece of fabric on each corner of the room.
