Wire A Singleswitch Ceiling Fan

Don't let the different colored wire confuse you.

Ceiling fans can be either the single switch or dual switch type. Single switch means that the light switch on the wall controls both the light on the fan and the fan itself. Dual switch has two switches -- one for the fan and one for the light. The wiring in your ceiling should allow for dual switch operation, so if you're installing a single switch fan, you may be left with the question, which wire goes where?

Instructions

1. Be sure the electricity to the light fixture and the switch is turned off at the breaker box.

2. Find the ground wire from the ceiling and twist the ground wire from the fan around it lightly. If your fan has a green wire, that is a ground wire. The ground wire coming out of the electrical box will be either green or bare copper wire. Place a plastic wire connector over the two wires and twist clockwise until tight.

3. Twist together the end of the white wire from the fan and the white wire from the electrical box. These white wires are the neutral wires. Put a wire connector over the two wires and twist clockwise until it is tight.

4. The remaining wires will be the hot wires, meaning they conduct electricity. Since your fan is a single-switch type, there will only be one hot wire coming from the electrical box; it is probably black. There will be two hot wires coming from the fan. They can be black, blue, gray or black and white. Connect the two ends of the hot wires coming from the fan and connect them to the one hot wire coming from the electrical box. Twist all three ends together and secure with a wire connector.
