Tropical Ceiling Treatments

Tropical decor can inspire feelings of relaxation and tranquility.

Many people enjoy the cool, breezy, balmy visions that tropical decor can inspire. Items reminiscent of the islands can remind someone of a favorite vacation home, or simply a relaxing spot they'd like to see. The materials required to create such effects are often inexpensive and easy to find. When applied to a ceiling, they can have a dramatic effect.

Murals

Murals are one way to achieve a tropical ceiling design. Many design companies offer products ranging from paintings and impressionistic designs, to tropical photographs which have been enlarged to mural size. Often these can be ordered with adhesive already applied to the back. Otherwise, these mural arts can be applied by dipping them in a combination of wallpaper paste and water following the manufacturer's instructions.

Grass Wallpaper

One of the hallmark material features of tropical design is its many uses of various grasses. Grasses of all varieties grow wild in the tropics, and have been turned into all manner of architectural elements including walls and roofs. Some of these grasses have also been made into wallpaper which could be applied to walls or a ceiling to create a subtle tropical effect.

Tropical Fans

One of the easiest ways to create a tropical ceiling effect, is to trade a traditional light fixture for a tropical inspired ceiling fan. Relatively inexpensive, fans with blades that resemble giant palm frond or other tropical leaves can be found at many big box home improvement stores as well as specialty design stores. Heighten the tropical effect by painting the ceiling a coll cerulean blue, like the clear skies of the tropics.
