Aprilaire 700 fan problems noise now nothing

Aprilaire 700 Fan problems (noise, now nothing)

I have an Aprilaire 700 that's 3 years old (it seems to be an automatic model that's set to run in manual mode). This is in a newly built house, so I'm easing into home maintenance as things break for the first time (i.e. I'm relatively new to all this stuff). While contractors were finishing our basement this summer the humidifier (which had always whistled annoyingly) started making a terrible screaming noise while it was running. I unplugged it and forgot about it until this winter, now that dryness is really starting to be a problem (the contractors swore they didn't do anything to it, and I have no reason not to believe them). I just plugged it back in tonight and the screaming started again, so I pulled it apart to check things out (learning from the manual that I probably ought to have replaced the water panel about 3 times already, oops). When I put it back together (which took a few bangs to get it snapped) the screaming sound while running was gone, but I get no other sounds either. There is a faint electrical buzz if I listen closely while the furnace is running, and water trickles from the drain outlet, but I can't hear the fan come on anymore. Based on all this, my best guess (and with my exp level it's mostly a guess) I'm thinking the motor went bad. I'm wondering which one of three things to do (or if anyone has a better suggestion): 1) Give up and call my HVAC guy (which I think is like $50 or $75 just to have them show up) 2) Order a new 700 ($220 to $250 with shipping depending on whether I get the manual or automatic). Then just snap the new fan housing on in place of the old. 3) Order a new motor (part 4670 it seems) and install it myself. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! -Dave The fan may be shot, without experience it hard to say what you should do. The fan motor is still available, if you are mechanically inclined then replace the motor, if not then call a contractor. The new 700 are a little different in that they dont have a internal transformer so the wiring has to change when install a new one. Cool thanks for the quick reply! I was hoping I'd find a here's how you replace the motor guide online but so far no luck. I disassembled the fan housing last night and it looks pretty straightforward (basically like 4 screws and a plug). Any gotcha's I should look out for? (like My God you have to drain the flux capacitors before you remove that!) no, it is just that, straight forward, 4 screws and 2 wires. So I ordered a new motor, only I was wrong about having a 700a/m, I actually have a 700 (so it was the wrong motor). Some extra testing with a multi-tester indicates that the motor wasn't getting any power anyway. Further inspection during that time led to my discovering the small capacitor on the circuit board had puked its poor little guts out (probably when my house got struck by lightning). New circuit board should be arriving today, and we'll see if that fixes it... Hi - I have exactly the same problem. Did you get it sorted out? I'm wondering if I should just buy a whole new unit online and try to install myself, or buy a new unit online and see if I can get an independent to put it in for me. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Originally Posted by dmasotti Hi - I have exactly the same problem. Did you get it sorted out? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. Sorry, I forgot to update here. Turns out the power surge broke my humidistat circuit board. I ordered the following: - APRIL AIRE 4238 CIRCUIT BOARD for about $55 at the time (Amazon.com: APRIL AIRE 4238 CIRCUIT BOARD: Home Improvement) After replacing just the circuit board it worked, but the humidistat clearly wasn't working right (I don't quite recall but I think it was running water 100%). So I ordered: - Aprilaire RP56 Auto Trac Humidistat for about $69 at the time (Amazon.com: Aprilaire RP56 Auto Trac Humidistat: Home Improvement) After replacing both it worked like new again. Getting just the circuit board saved me about $150 vs getting a new unit, plus I got to feel cool doing it, plus I didn't have to deal with mounting a new different shaped humidifier anywhere on my ducts. Now wish I was a circuit board export, b/c I might have been able to fix the old board for like 50 cents by just replacing the capacitor. Oh well...
