Screen door in wood frame

screen door in wood frame

Pretty much the last step in my porch project is going to be hanging the screen door. At this point I have 4x4s on the sides, 36 wide but don't yet have the top piece installed. My thinking is to use a 2x4 and to mount it 80.5 inches above the floor based on standard door height of 80. Does this give me enough room to work with? I plan to use wide Simpson L-brackets on top of the 2x to mount it into the frame as I'm not much good at toe-nailing...... I plan to use a wooden screen door, basic Home Depot brand (start with 36 and trim as needed), 3 external hinges, and wooden door stop moulding inside the frame on the sides and top to keep it from swinging inward. Haven't decided on the latch yet but will be something simple. Anyone see any gotchas? Ain't you glad you are this far along??? I think your idea for the screen door is right on. Since you are using a wooden screen door, purchase one of the turnbuckle type adjusters and install it diagonally from the hinge side to the latch side with the hinge side being higher. The wooden door will sag, this I guarantee. At least the turnbuckle will allow you to adjust the sag out later down the road. Make sure, with a framing square held 1/2 off the bottom that it will swing and clear the decking below. I have seen where decking is slightly off and the screen door hits when opening. Especially since you will be installing a sweep at some time or another. You may want to consider raising the door to a 3/4 and installing the sweep now, unless you are sure the door will clear the decking. Next project! Yea, its moving right along now I already have a turnbuckle adjuster setup that I bought for a gate project that never happened, will check it out and if it won't work will get another. Its not decking below, its a concrete slab but I guess the same principle applies either way. OK, so the sweep needs 3/4, will almost certainly go ahead and do that now as opposed to having my wife want one later and my frame being too short...... Thanks again for all your advice on my various questions! As I start to look at info out there ( such as http://doityourself.com/doors/h2frameadoor.htm ) on framing a door I see a recommendation to use 2 2x4s as the header and to use a cripple stud above them. What's the reasoning behind using 2 of them? Any reason not to use a piece of 4x instead? The previous frame, as I recall, definitely did not have the cripple stud, it had a small screened window in the space above the header. Too high to see out of and with so much screen elsewhere no need for the extra ventilation it would provide. What's the best way to go in this space, cover it with plywood? With or without the cripple stud? Thanks again. Well, hung the door yesterday. Came out pretty nicely. Ended up using a single piece of 4x4 for the header.
