Steam Clean Grout

Steam Cleaned Grout

For most people, cleaning grout in the bathroom or kitchen is way down the list of favorite things to do. No one likes to drag out an arsenal of cleaning products and spend a good part of the day scrubbing grout only to be disappointed with the results, not to mention being exposed to all types of harsh chemicals and the fumes they emit. There is an easier, safer way to have your grout sparkling clean and sanitized. Steam cleaning is the answer.

Instructions

1. Rent a steam cleaner. Steam cleaners come in a variety of sizes, price ranges and water capacities. The prices range from $41 to over $1,000. Grout should only need to be steam cleaned two or three times a year, so renting a steam cleaner may be a better option.

2. Remove all items sitting on the shelves or on the edge of the tub. Steam cleaners do drip water, so removal of anything that is in the way or could be damaged is essential.

3. Go over the area to be steam cleaned using warm water on a mop or a sponge to remove dust or surface dirt.

4. Fill the steam cleaner with water, and allow to reach proper operating temperature. Begin at the bottom or lowest point, if cleaning walls. Start applying steam with the applicator touching the wall or floor, concentrating on the grout lines. Pay special attention to any of the grout lines that have mold or mildew. Move slowly, and work on an area approximately 2 by 2 feet. Use a clean towel or rags to wipe off any water that runs down the wall to avoid streaks.

5. Once the walls or floor are thoroughly clean, the grout can be sealed. Follow the guidelines on the sealer container for application and drying. Reseal the grout twice a year.

6. If sealer is not being applied at this time, go over the floor or walls with a mild solution of vinegar and water and polish with a dry cloth. Microfiber cloths are great for this.

Tips Warnings

To make using a steam cleaner more economical, try borrowing one.

Use caution. The steam is very hot and can cause burns very quickly.
