Install A Ceiling Fan In A New Home

Install a Ceiling Fan in a New Home

Many new homes come with pre-existing connections for a ceiling fan, but it's up to the homeowner to actually install the fan. This is easier than doing an installation in an older home because you won't have to replace the electrical box. You can simply use the following steps in install the fan in the designated spot.

Instructions

1. Turn off the electricity, then remove the ceiling cap that is covering the ceiling fan connection to access the electrical box. In new homes with pre-existing ceiling fan connections, the electrical box will be capable of handing the weight of a ceiling fan. You won't have to make any modifications prior to installation

2. Attach the ceiling medallion to the ceiling. First, glue it into the proper place with urethane-based glue. Pull the wires down through the center, then complete the mounting with four nails, which you should hammer into the joist. Once they are pounded into place, set them with caulk. It's best to use a medallion made of stiff foam because those made of plaster can crack. If desired, you can paint it before you install it. Make sure the paint is completely dry before you mount it to the ceiling.

3. Mount the ceiling plate by screwing it to the electrical box. Pull the wires down through the plate's hole before screwing it into place.

4. Assemble the fan using the instructions provided when you purchased it. In general, you will be pulling the fan's wires through the pipe, which is then attached to the fan motor's top. However, there will be some variance depending on the type and brand of ceiling fan you purchased.

5. Connect the assembled fan to the electrical wires in the ceiling. The wires will be color-coded, so you simply put the matching wires together using a standard twist-on connector. When the wires are all connected, the fan can be lifted into position and screwed into place.

6. Assemble the ceiling fan's blades and screw them into place on the fan. If your ceiling fan has a light kit, you should also install it at this time. The fixture will be attached to the wires that hang down from the motor.

7. Turn on the electricity and test the ceiling fan. It should turn on and operate smoothly, and if it has a light kit all of the bulbs should work. If the fan doesn't function, turn off the electricity and recheck your work.
