Install Ceiling Lights From Chains

Hanging lights give an elegant look to a room while providing a versatile form of lighting (since they can be installed at whatever height you want). The design usually includes a canopy that fastens to the ceiling, with a chain dangling down and the light at the end of it. The power cord for the light will be strung in among the links of the chain. The light connects to an existing electrical box just like any other ceiling light, though the adjustment of the chain and cord makes it a little more complicated.

Instructions

1. Turn off power to the room at the fuse box. Access the existing fixture, using a ladder. Remove the fixture from the ceiling by taking out the mounting screws or bolts holding it to the electrical box. Disconnect the electrical wiring, letting the wire ends hang out of the box.

2. Raise the new fixture to the box, letting the hanging light portion (at the end of the chain) rest on the ladder. Hold the top canopy of the fixture up to the electrical box, with the wires of the fixture hanging out of the canopy.

3. Twist together the wires coming out of the electrical box to the wires of the fixture, using wire nuts. Match corresponding colors of wire (generally, one white and one black from each source). Wrap the wire nuts in electrical tape to ensure there is no exposed wire. Hook the bare copper ground wire from the electrical box to the green ground screw on the fixture.

4. Set the canopy section of the fixture up to the box, tucking the wires in as you go. Fasten the canopy to the electrical box, using the mounting screws that came with the fixture.

5. Cut the chain to the desired length with your bolt cutters, rehanging the top link to the canopy. The light should hang at least 7 feet off the floor. Slide an excess electrical cord up into the canopy, so the cord is the same length as the shortened chain.

6. Turn on the power and test the light.
