Adding a swirled texture to a ceiling will add interest to a room.
Adding texture to a ceiling is a simple and straightforward process, but it does take a long time. The swirl pattern is very simple, but it is one of the most time-involved texturing processes. It can take you up to two weeks to swirl texture the ceiling of a large room. However, once you have the texturing is in place, the appearance of the room will change for the better.
Instructions
1. Move all of the furniture out of the room. Cover the floors in tarps to protect them from any joint compound that may fall from the ceiling as you apply it.
2. Put on a hat to protect your hair, wear old clothes and eye protection so you do not get stray bits of drywall joint compound in your eyes.
3. Clean the surface of the ceiling. Use a gentle cleanser and a large, soft brush to scrub the ceiling to remove all dirt, dust and oil. Rinse with a damp cloth and allow to dry for at least two hours.
4. Mix the joint compound inside a bucket. Most joint compound is too thick to use for texturing unless you thin it slightly. Thin the compound until it is slightly thicker than regular wall paint.
5. Apply a coat of joint compound over the entire ceiling with the paint roller. Allow the compound to dry for two hours.
6. Apply a second coating of joint compound to the ceiling, only this time, make the compound thicker. The compound should be thick enough to hold the texture of whatever object you place in it. Apply about a ¼ inch thick coat of
7. Use a large putty knife to make swirl patterns on the ceiling. You can make the patterns random, or make them all point the same way. When you finish with one three-foot section, roll on more joint compound and texture the next section. Repeat this process until you have textured the entire ceiling in a swirl pattern. Allow the compound to dry for 24 hours before you paint it.
