Mount A Hampton Bay Light Fixture

Look for Hampton Bay light fixtures and ceiling fans for sale in retail home centers. The installation of a Hampton Bay light fixture lends style and illumination to living rooms, bedrooms or family rooms. Some Hampton Bay fixtures can be installed directly to an electrical box or to the bottom of a Hampton Bay ceiling fan. Installing a light fixture should not require the services of an electrician if you have average do-it-yourself skills.

Preparations

When you mount your Hampton Bay light fixture to an existing electrical box or to a Hampton Bay ceiling fan, you must turn off the electrical current. The circuit breaker that controls the electrical circuit that the fixture will be mounted to must be turned off. If your breaker box has fuses instead of circuit breakers, remove the fuse. Test the wires with a no-touch electrical tester before making any connections.

Remove Existing Fixture

If your Hampton Bay light fixture is intended to replace an existing fixture, you must of course remove the original fixture first. Do this by removing the shade and the bulbs to expose the fixture retaining screws. Remove the screws and pull the fixture from the ceiling just far enough to expose the wiring. The wire nuts on the wire connections can be removed by hand, but the wires may need to be untwisted with pliers. You can then remove the fixture from the ceiling.

Mount to Ceiling

If you choose to mount your new fixture directly to the ceiling, you will find that its installation is very similar to that of regular light fixtures. The mounting bracket that came with your fixture is mounted to the underside of the electrical box using the screws that came with the box. You should route the black wire that comes from the electrical box around one side of the bracket and the white and ground wires on the other side of the bracket. Ensuring that the wires extend past the bottom of the box will make electrical connections to the fixture easier. Wires from the box can then be twisted to like-colored wires from the fixture and capped with wire nuts. The light fixture itself is attached to the underside of the bracket on the electrical box. Once you install the bulbs and shade, you can restore the electrical power and test the operation of the fixture.

Mount to Fan

If you decide to mount your fixture to a Hampton Bay ceiling fan, the bottom cover must be removed from the ceiling fan. Unscrew the center plug in the switch housing cover -- which is revealed after removing the bottom cover. The wires from the fixture need to be threaded through the center hole, then the cover can be threaded to the top of the light fixture. Wiring connections are made in much the same way as if mounting the fixture directly to the ceiling. The cover can then be secured to the bottom of the fan using the original screws. The assembly and testing of the fixture are the same.
