Repair A Ceiling Fan Remote

A working remote control is necessary to operate a tall ceiling fan.

Dust and other contaminants that get inside the case of a ceiling fan remote can cause the keys to stick and function improperly. To repair a ceiling fan remote, disassemble and clean the keys and internal components. You will need a few supplies from a hardware store or electronics shop, as well as a few common household tools. However, you don't need to have any special skills with electronics to perform this repair.

Instructions

1. Turn the ceiling fan remote face down on a table. Open the battery compartment lid; in some cases, there will be a screw you'll need to remove with a Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Remove the batteries, and put them and the lid aside for reassembly later.

2. Remove any screws from inside the battery compartment, using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Remove the screws from the four corners of the back of the remote with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

3. Insert the tip of a flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver into the seam between the front and back sections of the remote on its top. Slide the tip back and forth across the remote. Repeat this procedure on the bottom of the remote.

4. Pull the back section of the remote off the front section with your fingers. Place the back section on the table with the electronic components facing up.

5. Remove the rubber key membrane from inside the front section, using your fingers. Wipe off the membrane with a soft cloth on both sides and edges. Wipe the inside and edges of the front section with a clean cloth. Blow out the front section with a burst of compressed air.

6. Remove the screws from the four corners of the circuit board inside the back section with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Wipe the inside and edges of the back section with a clean cloth. Blow out the back section with a burst of compressed air.

7. Insert an end of the included straw into the nozzle on the electrical cleaner spray. Hold the circuit board by the edges with one hand and the electrical cleaner spray with the other. Spray both sides of the circuit board with the electrical cleaner spray.

8. Return the circuit board to the back section and reattach the screws. Return the rubber key membrane to the front section. Place the back section on the front section and reattach the screws to the four corners. Reattach any screws to the inside of the battery compartment.

9. Return the battery to the inside of the battery compartment and replace the lid.
