Wire A Remote Control For Ceiling Fan

Convert your existing ceiling fan into a remote-control fan.

You do not have to purchase a new ceiling fan to enjoy the convenience of remote-control operation. You can convert any ceiling fan to a remote-control fan by adding a remote receiver into the wiring of the fan. Whether your ceiling fan is installed on a downrod or is a flush mount, either style of fan can be wired to a remote control so it can be operated from your couch or bed.

Instructions

1. Identify the two sets of wires on the remote-control receiver. The first set of wires (a black and white wire) attaches to the power-supply wiring inside the ceiling fan junction box. The remaining set of wires consists of a black wire, an additional wire labeled as the light kit and a white wire that attaches to the ceiling fan.

2. Turn the ceiling fan onto high speed. Turn on the ceiling-fan light.

3. Turn off the electrical supply to the ceiling fan by turning off the breaker at the main electrical panel.

4. Remove the canopy from the ceiling fan. It attaches with two or more screws at the very top of the ceiling fan where it connects to the ceiling. Verify the disconnection of power by touching one prong of an electrical tester to any metal on the ceiling-fan junction box and inserting the other prong into the wire connector holding the black wires together. When the tester does not light, the power is disconnected.

5. Disconnect the ceiling fan. Remove the wire connectors holding the black wire from the junction box to the black and light-kit wires from the ceiling fan. Remove the wire connector holding the two white wires together.

6. Install the remote receiver. Locate the two wires on the power-supply side of your ceiling fan remote receiver and attach them to the two wires from inside the electrical junction box. Attach the black wire to the black wire and the white wire to the white wire. Twist orange wire connectors to both sets of wires. Attach the black wire from the ceiling fan to the black wire on the ceiling fan side of the remote receiver by twisting an orange wire connector onto the two wires. Repeat this connection for the white wire from the ceiling fan and the white wire from remote receiver. Attach the remaining light-kit wire to the remaining wire on the remote receiver by twisting an orange wire connector onto them. Push the remote receiver into the electrical box and replace the ceiling-fan canopy.

7. Turn the power back on to the ceiling fan by turning on the breaker at the main electrical panel.
