Fit Curtain Tracks

Curtain tracks help your home maintain a modern style with clean lines across the décor. Tracks can make curtains easy to open and close. They are a good choice for fabrics that will not hold up to the wear of hands pulling on the fabric to move them about. Track kits can be purchased from the local do-it-yourself stores and have hardware included in the package for installation. Install a curtain track yourself instead of hiring a professional installer.

Instructions

1. Inspect the track kit packaging to ensure all of the contents are there.

2. Measure with a metal tape a location about 3 1/4 to 6 inches above the top of the window's casing. Tall ceilings should be about halfway between the ceiling and the window molding. You may need a stepladder to get an accurate measurement.

3. Mark the location for the holding brackets to be centered over the window casing. Six inches of track space should be on each side of the window casing. Measure this total distance and cut your track to this length, using a hacksaw.

4. Measure from the floor to the position where you want the brackets be attached. Mark this point with an X; repeat this on the other side of the window. Run a string line between the two height marks, secure the lines in place with two bradawls, to ensure the track will be level when attached. Visually inspect the line to verify the string is level. Raise or lower one side if the line is not level.

5. Measure and mark the wall between the two outer bracket marks, using the string line as a guide. This will ensure the brackets line up accurately. Space multiple brackets out evenly across the width of the track.

6. Cover your furniture with a dust sheet. Drill pilot holes where your plugs and screws (included in the kit) will be placed. Install the plugs in the wall and twist the screws in the plugs. Attach the brackets to the wall, following the instructions that came with the package.

7. Hook the track to the brackets. Tighten in place using the screws included in the kit.
