Wire A Ceiling Fan With A Light Fixture

Ceiling fan with light fixture.

Ceiling fans are a simple and economical way to control and move air through a room. Depending on the direction the fan spins, a ceiling fan can help with the heating during the winter and the cooling during the summer. Adding a light fixture to a ceiling fan helps to replace the light fixture given up when the fan is first installed. The most important thing with fan installation is safety and making sure the electrical box can support the weight of the fan and light fixture.

Instructions

1. Shut off power to the existing light fixture circuit at the main power panel. Remove the existing light fixture by removing the light fixture mounting screws. This should provide access to the electrical box.

2. Remove the plastic twist caps holding the fixture wires to the supply wires, and remove the light fixture.

3. Check the stability of the electrical box. Most electrical boxes must be replaced because they are not designed to support the weight of the ceiling fan and light fixture. Remove the screws holding the electrical box in place. If the box is held in place by nails, the nail will have to be cut using a hacksaw or reciprocating saw.

4. Install a ceiling fan rated electrical box by setting the electrical box into position and securing it to the ceiling joists per the manufacturer’s instructions. Push the existing supply wires into the new box. Once the box is secure, fan installation can begin.

5. Attach the fan mounting bracket to the electrical box using the screws provided with the fan installation kit. Hang the fan on to the installation bracket. Connect the black wire of the fan to the black wire of the supply wires. Connect the white wire of the fan to the white wire of the supply wires. The fan wires should be connected to the same wires the original light fixture was connected to and in the same order.

6. Add new plastic twist caps to these two splices. Push the wires up into the electrical box and secure the fan electrical box cover.

7. Remove the 3 or 4 screws holding the light fixture cap on to the bottom of the ceiling fan. This will expose the fixture wiring on the ceiling fan. Remove the center screw from the cap. Insert the light fixture wiring through the center cap hole and screw the cap on to the light fixture.

8. Locate the two wires labeled for the light fixture inside the light fixture holder of the ceiling fan. Connect those two wires to the two wires of the light fixture. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Add plastic twist caps to both splices. Push the wires back up into the light fixture holder and attach the cap and light fixture back to the fan. Reinstall the cap holding screw to secure the light fixture and cap to the fan.

9. Turn the power back on and test all stages of fan operation.
