Install Kinetic Art Without Damaging A Ceiling

Use a drill to make a clean hole in the ceiling when hanging kinetic art.

Kinetic art is a style of sculpture with moving parts. The simplest way for the average do-it-yourselfer to hang a kinetic mobile from a ceiling without damaging it is to hang it from a plant or swag hook. If you hang the hook directly into a joist, you can simply screw the threaded end of the hook into the joist. Otherwise, the best way to ensure the art and hook are secure is to use a toggle bolt.

Instructions

1. Select a toggle bolt kit with a hook to hang the kinetic art from the ceiling. A small 1/8-inch bolt should be sufficient to hold the weight of the art. Read the packaging for exact weight recommendations.

2. Drill a hole into the ceiling where you want to hang the kinetic art. Use a 3/8-inch drill bit if you are installing a 1/8-inch toggle bolt, or a 1/2-inch drill bit for a 3/16 inch toggle bolt.

3. Twist the threaded bolt that came with the kit onto the toggle bolt. Twist the other end of the bolt into top side of the hook. The distance between the two should be the approximate thickness of your ceiling, often 1/2 inch.

4. Fold both wings of the toggle and insert it into the ceiling. Once inside the ceiling, the wings will expand, creating a secure fit. Tighten or loosen the hook by twisting it for a snug fit.

5. Hang the kinetic art from the hook.
