Add a light kit to your fan, or change it.
Ceiling fans come in all shapes and sizes. Some ceiling fans come furnished with light kits and some do not. If you want to add or change a light kit on your ceiling fan it's not going to be a problem because all residential ceiling fans come pre-wired for adding a light kit. Knowing wire a light kit gives you options with your ceiling fan you didn't have before. You can add a light to brighten you room or you can change the light kit to coordinate with your room d cor.
Instructions
1. Shut the electrical power off to the ceiling fan by turning off the breaker at the main panel.
2. Remove the light kit wire housing cap. This is located at the bottom of your ceiling fan, directly beneath the point where your fan blades connect to the motor. The wire housing cap will be connected by three or more screws.
3. Pop the knock-out cover from the light kit wire housing cap. This is a plastic knock-out plug located in the bottom of the housing cap. It's easier to identify by looking inside the cap rather than the outside. Push with your finger to pop the plug out of the cap.
4. Attach the light kit to the light kit wire housing cap. Thread the light kit wires through the knock-out and screw the nipple from the light kit onto the wire housing cap. The nipple is a hollow piece of pipe that is threaded on the exterior from top to bottom. The light kit wires will be threaded through the nipple, allowing you to easily attach the light kit to the cap. A nut will also be provided with the light kit to screw to the nipple once the kit is attached to the cap. Use the nut to secure the light kit to the cap.
5. Locate the light kit wires in the kit's wire housing at the bottom of the ceiling fan. You'll have one white wire, and an additional wire will be labeled "Light." The light wire may be a number of different colors depending on the manufacturer of the ceiling fan.
6. Twist an orange wire nut onto the white wire from the light kit, plus the white wire in the light kit wire housing, connecting them together. Twist another orange wire nut onto the black wire from the light kit and the wire labeled "Light" in the light kit wire housing, connecting these wires together as well.
7. Attach the light kit and cap to the ceiling fan using the screws you removed from the cap in Step 2.
8. Remove the canopy at the top of the ceiling fan. The canopy covers the hanging bracket and the wiring for the ceiling fan. The canopy is held on by four screws.
9. Verify that the light kit wire is connected to the power supply wire from the ceiling fan electrical box. Locate the black wire from the electrical box; it will be connected to the back wire from the ceiling fan with a wire nut. If the wire labeled as the lighting wire is connected with the two black wires, do nothing, and replace the canopy. If the wire labeled as the lighting wire is not connected, remove the wire nut from the two black wires, add the lighting wire and twist the wire nut onto all three wires. Replace the canopy.
10. Restore the electrical power to the ceiling fan by turning on the breaker in the main electrical panel.
