Put Beadboard On A Ceiling

Put Beadboard on a Ceiling

Beadboard is a tongue-and-groove wooden treatment for interior walls and ceilings. It can be stained or painted to adapt to a room's design needs. The boards are cut to length and then installed. The tongue is nailed to the ceiling and the groove side of the following board locks over the tongue. Beadboard is an ideal treatment for a country- or traditional-style home -- the finish can transform the traditional look of beadboard into a contemporary design.

Instructions

1. Measure the ceiling's dimensions with a tape measure.

2. Cut the required number of beadboards to length, based on the room dimensions, using a miter saw.

3. Position the first length of beadboard with the back side flat against the ceiling. The groove side of the board should be against the wall.

4. Nail finishing nails through the tongue of the board every 6 to 8 inches, using a hammer. Angle the nail in toward the board's center. This is called toe-nailing.

5. Slide the groove side of the second board over the tongue of the first board, locking it into place. Toe-nail the second board through the tongue and continue with the installation of the remaining boards, in the same manner.

6. Put the final length of beadboard into place to test the fit. Mark the required width onto the board, if it's not a perfect fit. Adjust the table saw fence to trim off the excess width. Cut the board to width, using the table saw to remove its tongue side.

7. Insert the groove side of the final board over the tongue of the previous board and push it tightly against the ceiling and wall. Nail the outside edge nearest the wall every 6 to 8 inches to fasten it into place.
