Fix A Faux Wood Beam Vaulted Ceiling

Faux wood beam ceilings can be repaired with a few simple tools.

Faux wood beams are typically made out of a type of Styrofoam called polystyrene. This foam becomes quite hard, much like wood, and is generally very durable. However, nicks and gouges can occur if the faux wood beams are dropped or handled roughly. Slight damage can be repaired, but if the damage to the faux beam is deeper than a 1/2-inch, replacing the section is necessary in order to maintain the look of the beam.

Instructions

1. Touch up slight damage with latex paint and a paintbrush. If the faux beam is merely dented in spots or the paint has flaked away, match the paint color and apply one coat of latex paint to the surface. Let it dry for at least 4 hours and apply a second coat.

2. Cut away the damaged piece of foam with a utility knife. Trim away the section that has damage. Cut through the foam on the sides and top. Peel it off of the adhesive on the ceiling. You may need to use the utility knife to trim off any excess pieces of foam that may stick to the adhesive.

3. Sand down the bare area with a medium-grit sandpaper. This will help remove any additional foam that is left behind.

4. Cut a patch piece with a utility knife. Measure the area where you removed the damage portion of the beam. Cut a new piece of foam to fit into the area.

5. Coat the back of the foam and the ceiling with construction grade adhesive.

6. Fit the replacement piece into place on the ceiling. Press it into the adhesive firmly to get a good seal.
