Paint A New Ceiling

Learn paint your new ceiling.

Painting a new ceiling is an important step for finishing a room; you'll want to do it before you paint adjacent walls. Although painting may seem like a simple job, it is important to understand the proper steps to take prior to beginning your work. Before tackling this project, choose a paint color that matches the overall room decor and fits your specific needs. Some homeowners/decorators enjoy using a white or light-colored paint to add space to the room, but the specific shade or hue is a personal choice that only you can make.

Instructions

Preparing to Paint a New Ceiling

1. Place painter's tape along the seam where the wall meets the ceiling. This will help to demarcate the border between the walls and ceiling, and will protect different-color walls from the ceiling paint. Press the tape firmly to achieve a good seal.

2. Remove as much furniture as possible from the room. This will help you to avoid unnecessary spilling or dripping accidents.

3. Cover the floor and any remaining furniture with a tarp, a drop cloth or another form of nonplastic sheeting. Plastic is likely to stick to your feet, causing it to move out of place as you walk, increasing the risk of accidentally getting paint on the floor.

4. Use a paintbrush to cut in with the primer. "Cutting in" means to paint the borders of the ceiling, where you placed the tape. Most likely a roller won't be able to reach these spaces without marking the walls.

5. Prime the rest of the ceiling with a roller. Allow the primer to dry. Different primers may have slightly different dry times, so be sure to follow the manufacturer's directions.

6. Paint the ceiling. Start by cutting in with your chosen paint color.

7. Cover the rest of the ceiling with paint, using the paint roller. Allow time for the paint to dry.

8. Repeat with a second coat once the first is dry.
