Dermatologist Salary Information

Dermatologists treat common conditions like psoriasis and acne as well as severe skin issues like cancer.

Dermatologists are specialized medical doctors who diagnose and treat conditions of the skin. As pointed out by the Diploma Guide website and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for medical care likely will increase as the population rises -- dermatologists can expect more work as more aging individuals seek help for skin issues. As physicians, dermatologists enjoy high wages compared to other industries.

Average Salary

The average salary for physicians and surgeons was $173,860, or $83.59 per hour, as of 2009, according to the BLS. However, the Jobs-Salary website shows a much higher average for dermatologists, showing $235,156 as the average annual wage for 2010. Doctors who specialize tend to earn more than general physicians, according to the BLS.

Range

Dermatologists can expect a salary between $153,000 and $246,238, according to the Payscale website. The Jobs-Salary website shows that dermatologists may earn anywhere from $102,000 to $400,000. The Dermatologist Salary website indicates a starting wage of $200,000, however, with top earners taking home up to $2 million.

Experience

According to Payscale, experience is a major factor in how much a dermatologist earns. Those just starting out take home $174,055 as of 2010. Those with 10 or more years of experience earn up to $269,602.

Gender

Normally, men tend to have an advantage over women in terms of how much they can expect to earn in a job -- this is the proverbial glass ceiling to which women's activists so often refer. However, this is not the case with dermatology. The industry is dominated by women rather than men. Men top out at $263,231 as of 2010, while women earn up to $298,326, according to Payscale. The starting salaries for women also tend to be higher.
