Wire A Ceiling Fan Light

Wire a Ceiling Fan Light

A ceiling fan can come with or without a light. Wiring a ceiling fan light can be a simple process if you have the right tools and moderate knowledge of electricity. Doing this project yourself can save you some money. If you do not know what you are doing when it comes to working with electricity, however, hire an electrician to do the work for you because working with electricity can be dangerous.

Instructions

1. Use the drill and the 1-inch wood bit to drill a hole by the breaker box where you plan to install the light switch (for new construction).

2. Use a tape measure to measure from the breaker box to the light switch. Measure the 110 wire and cut it with the wire cutters, leaving extra wire at both ends for easy connecting.

3. Take the measured wire, and run it from the hole at the breaker box to the hole for the light switch. Put the switch box in where you are installing the new light switch.

4. Clean the wires on the end for the bottom of the light switch. Attach the black wire on the right side of the light switch and the white and copper wire on the left side of the light switch.

5. Measure the wire from the light switch to where you are installing the ceiling fan light. Leave a little extra wire on both ends of the wire, and cut it with the wire cutters.

6. Clean the wires for the top of the light switch. Put the black wire on the right side of the light switch and the white and copper wires on the left side of the light switch. Tighten these down with a flathead screwdriver. Place the light switch in the switch box, and tighten it with a flathead screwdriver.

7. Attach the switch box on the ceiling joist closest to where you are installing the ceiling fan light by using Philips screws and a Philips screwdriver.

8. Take the wires you just put in for the light switch, and run them to where you are putting the ceiling fan light. Put the wires in the switch box, leaving extra wire to hook the light up. Attach the black wire to the black wire, the color coded wire for the fan to the black wire and the white wire to the white wire. The copper wire goes on the green ground screw for the ceiling fan light.

9. Put the wire nuts on the wires for the ceiling fan light, and tighten them by turning them clockwise. Put the electrical tape on the wire nuts, and keep taping them with the electrical tape until they are completely covered. Place the light bracket on the ceiling joist to hold up the light. Tighten the light fixture with the screws that came with the ceiling light and a Philips screwdriver.

10. Clean the wire at the breaker box with the wire cutters. Put the black wire in the breaker, and tighten the screw with a flathead screwdriver. Place the white wire and copper wire in the ground bars in the breaker box, and tighten them with a flathead screwdriver. Make sure the breaker is turned off, and put it in the breaker box.

11. Turn the breaker back on. Check the new connections with the electrical tester to make sure everything is working properly.
