The light coming from most ceiling fan kits is merely bright enough to light a room for easy access and movement. Dress up ceiling fan globes with a quick application of craft spray paint---no need for stencils and decorative motifs that are difficult to see clearly. Instead, apply a luscious pearlescent or metallic color that allows the light from the globe to create a warm glow. It's quick, it's easy and it adds a bit of sparkle that is unobtrusive and elegant at the same time.
Instructions
1. Apply a spray paint that can be applied to glass. Choices include a frosted finish, glitter, iridescent, pearlescent, stained glass and a webbing texture that mimics marble.
2. Test the chosen paint on a similar glass surface---look for a warm glow when held in front of a light. Sheets of glass can be purchased through home, remodeling, hardware and picture framing stores---check arts and crafts stores too. Similar globes may be available for a very low price at a salvage or recycled building supply store.
3. Remove the globe from the ceiling fixture and clean it using warm, soapy water and a sponge. Allow the globe to dry thoroughly before applying the spray paint.
4. Cover a work surface with newspaper or a dropcloth. Work in a well-ventilated area (outside is the perfect place when using spray paint). Use a work surface that can be walked around completely---this allows for a cleaner paint application because the ceiling fan globe does not need to be moved.
5. Cover any metal or decoration that should not receive paint, using painter's tape. Place the globe opening side down on the prepared work surface.
6. Spray on the paint, following the manufacturer's instructions. Use a sweeping motion that begins on one side of the globe and moves across to the other. Begin the stroke several inches away from one edge of the globe and end it several inches away from the globe's opposite edge. Move around the globe, applying the paint evenly. Allow the paint to dry completely--an hour will usually be adequate--and return the globe to the fan fixture.
