Removal of an unattractive popcorn ceiling can be a messy job, leading to a room covered in plaster dust and debris. Instead of taking off the ugly texture, install PVC tiles over it, which allows you to transform the room in less time with minimal cleanup. PVC ceiling tiles are glue-up, and you can cut them with scissors, making it easy to adjust the sizes if necessary.
Instructions
1. Prepare the ceiling for tile installation by brushing away any loose sections of paint or plaster.
2. Use a measuring tape to find the direct center of the room. Attach one side of a chalk snap line to the center portion of the ceiling. Pull the line tight, extending for the entire length of the ceiling center. Snap the center of the line so it leaves a mark on the ceiling to serve as a guide.
3. Cover the entire back of a PVC tile with ceramic tile adhesive. Spread it around with a glue roller until an even layer is present.
4. Stand on a ladder and press the tile into place using the chalk outline as a guide. The tile should line up with one side of the chalk line. Start at the point where the line meets the wall.
5. Continue to apply adhesive and stick the tiles in place, making sure the edges touch one another and don't overlap. Make a straight tile line on one side of the chalk line until you reach the other side of the room. Trim any edge tiles to fit if necessary. Work your way out from the first tile line until the entire popcorn ceiling is covered.
