Refinish An Antique Pan Light

Pan lights with one bulb

Pan lights are an interesting addition to your home's decor. Most are vintage or antique lighting fixtures. They are all comprised of a "pan" or disc-shaped piece of metal with one or more lights hanging from the circular pan. You can comb your local antique store or flea market to find one of these lights. A pan light hanging in your home can be a great conversation piece, though you may find that the finish of the light doesn't match your home's decor. Most of the fixtures you find will be brass. Consider refinishing the pan light with spray paint and glaze to maintain the antique appeal of the fixture while eliminating the brass finish.

Instructions

1. Clean the light fixture thoroughly using an ammonia-based cleaner and paper towels. Antique pan lights are covered in years of dirt and grime. Make sure to remove all of the residue to ensure the best possible finish on your pan light.

2. Move the pan light outside and place it on a drop cloth. You will be working with spray primer and the fumes from the primer will be more tolerable outdoors. Cover any areas of the light that you don't wish to paint with low-tack painter's tape and newspaper.

3. Lightly sand the entire light fixture using fine-grit sandpaper. Sanding the metal surface will create some texture, allowing the primer to sink into the grooves and creating a better bond with the metal surface.

4. Spray the entire pan light with white primer. Use a bonding primer. The can should indicate that the product is good for metal and other slick surfaces. Spray two to three thin coats of primer until the light fixture is completely covered. Allow the primer to dry.

5. Mix one part dark brown paint with four parts glaze. Dip a clean rag into the glaze and begin wiping the glaze onto the light fixture to create an antique effect. Wipe off excess glaze with a different clean rag. Continue wiping glaze on and off until you get a look that you like. Allow the glaze to dry.

6. Spray the entire fixture with polyurethane. Polyurethane will protect the finish and keep it from chipping. You can find spray polyurethane at your local home improvement store. Use a steady back-and-forth motion to coat the pan light with the polyurethane topcoat. Allow the topcoat to dry.
